Community Nature Area

  • Our vision is to create a shared woodland space for the village community and surrounding areas, with the opportunity for social interaction across all generations.

The project is to develop an area of land between the school and the riverbank. This area will be developed with local community involvement for use by local residents, schools and community groups.

The land will be developed to incorporate:

    • A woodland and nature area.
    • Natural habitats to further encourage the variety of species of birds and wildlife it already attracts, including bird, mammal habitation boxes and bird hides.
    • Sculpture trail, designed by the local community.
    • Sculptural seating and bridges, designed by the local community and created and installed by a local artist.
    • An outdoor Information Shelter.
    • A picnic area, designed by the local community.
    • A herb garden, fern gardens and sensory walk.
    • Interpretation panels, demonstrating the local heritage and local wildlife.

This will provide an immediate safe local nature area accessible by all (the only local nature reserve in an eighteen mile radius), and a relaxing shared space with opportunities for social interaction across all generations therefore providing an opportunity for the community.

By developing this local resource a new green lung would be created by the community, for the community. Conservation of an otherwise unmanaged woodland will create a safe, exciting space for future generations to enjoy and share.

A creative and imaginative environmental conservation and arts programme will engage and encompass the local community and provide training for community members to understand and develop the land encouraging biodiversity and to further encourage native species of birds and wildlife.

This is a very exciting project and with the support of Voluntary Action North Lincolnshire (VANL) we have now completed our bid applications for LEADER and WREN funding.

The LEADER programme of funding is part of the Rural Development Programme for England and aims to improve the rural areas of North Lincolnshire. Initial feedback has been of an impressive example of community support.

Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) is a not-for-profit business that helps benefit the lives of people who live close to landfill sites by awarding grants for community, conservation and heritage projects. WREN are fully committed to enhancing the community environment, natural conservation and heritage aspects of the world in which we live and create a beneficial and lasting legacy for future generations.

We will keep you informed as to their decision in the coming weeks!
